Filming, sailing and a lunar eclipse

Friday morning, waaaay too early to even fathom and I’m up getting ready for a full day of shooting. This time I’m working on our documentary on Artificial Life.

Last week we got into how synthetic biology and a 3D printer potentially could work together and create magic. This week, we focus on getting footage of personal locations, thoughts and moments. It is as nice as it sounds, but planning to do an outdoor shoot with the sun out in Denmark in late October is a monster of a task, since Fall weather here is randomly mischievous to say the least. We checked the forecast many times a day all week and had to be obnoxiously fluid in our schedule.

Finally we decided on Friday and this morning the director of photography Soeren Kuhn and I bee-lined straight from Copenhagen towards our first location in Kerteminde harbor where we were supposed to shoot on a big sailboat. The plan was to get morning sun. However, the wind was too strong for us to even get out of the harbor so we had to change our schedule, turn around and shoot the other footage in Elsinore first.

I was truly upset at first. I get nervous when the schedule starts crumbling from the get-go. It is never a good sign and I cannot risk to lose a sailing shot like this since I am going back to LA soon and cannot ‘just shoot it another day’. Important to recognize; the weather in Denmark will get worse and worse from now on until March, which makes anything outdoors utopia. So I was ready to sail out in serious stormy conditions because we had tons of sunlight and ‘shoot around it’. ‘It’ being the huge waves, weather and foam flying around.

Luckily, I was talked out of my momentarily insanity. The forecast promised almost no wind and sun later in the afternoon, so we rescheduled the day and somehow managed to get the talent transported to the new location fast and began shooting only with a bit of a delay. Then onwards back to Kerteminde, which is a long, long drive, but we made it in time, and the weather was absolutely stunning as the forecast had predicted. We had the most exquisite trip out on the ocean. Wow! A dolphin played close to the boat, and as the sun set the moon rose slowly over the horizon and I remembered we have a lunar eclipse tonight. What a wonderful world we live in….

After a loooong day of successful shooting outdoors, I was beat. So I jumped into the tub filled with bath salt and delicious bubbles…. mmmhhh…. How divine! Tmro it’s time for another 2 hours of ass kicking workout and then some fun with the girls – yay! <3
