Polo Player Baby

When it comes to the word ‘Polo’ I usually associate it with either The Polo Lounge at The Beverly Hills Hotel, where the McCarthy salad is legendary, with the designer Ralph Lauren or with the gorgeous Argentinian men, who ride like the wind while swinging their clubs.

I have always found Polo to be one of the sexiest sports ever. The atmosphere, the skills it takes, the strength, the men and of course the outfits. Moreover I am a big, big fan of horses and I have had my own horse while I lived in New Mexico. An Arabian. But as I grew up life took my around the globe many times and I haven’t settled enough yet to be in a place where I can have a horse again. So I was ecstatic this particular Sunday morning since I was taking my first Polo lesson ever. 🙂

My friend is already pretty skilled and so were the other people around me at the California Polo Club. I was definitely the rookie in the field this morning plus my ‘Polo gear’ was not exactly after the book. I wore a mixture between old bad-ass black cowboy boots, denim riding pants UK style, a Ralph Lauren polo shirt on top of another shirt, gloves and a helmet. ‘Cowgirl meets sort of Polo player’.

Our Polo coach Ebe is British and looks and sounds the part of a Polo Player coach if I ever saw one. Dressed to the nines, impeccable manners and of course he speaks Spanish fluently from his stays in Argentina and Mexico where he has played and competed for years.

For one hour I was in the saddle on the most amazing Polo pony (It was a horse. Have no idea why they call it a pony). And I had to let go of all my old habits from riding British and Western style to understand how you maneuver the animal. These horses are so well trained it is a joy riding them and Elena, who I was riding this morning was so fast and I did close to nothing to get her to turn on a dime, trot, canter and come to a halt on the spot. I know, I’m geeking out on the horse stuff, so I’ll quit now and tell you that Polo takes so much patience and skills. It feels like a combination of golf, tennis and barrel racing on horse back. I’m hooked and want to come back for more.

Hope your weekend was fun and you will have a great week. Here are some photos from yesterday morning… xoxo KK
