Hi Hi Street

During Fashion week Copenhagen aims to make the city happening by bringing style and fashion into the streets. The idea is to allow people who are not invited to the shows and VIP events to enjoy some of the glam and fun in alternative ways. One way – I guess – is to close one of the main shopping streets, put grass on it, serve beer, play soccer and throw a DJ into the mix.

Something you gotta understand about the Vikings: In Danish terms all is good in the hood when beer and soccer is accessible. And after much champagne and cupcakes at the shows I sort of agree.

Here are a couple of shots from the famous ‘Hej-Hej Gade’, which translates into ‘Hi- Hi Street’. A Poor translation. I know. However, the reason why it’s called ‘Hi-Hi Street’ is because this particular street used to be the unofficial ‘catwalk’ of Copenhagen.

This is a myth not known by out of towners. But among true Copenhageners it is a fact that people would stroll down this particular street in their latest, posing and looking effortlessly fashionable like Copenhageners do so well. And while trotting the pavement, casually of course, the die-hard fashionistas, artists, wanna-bees and has-beens would spit out a laid-back ‘hi-hi’ with a smirk left and right to the peeps and voyeurs in the street that day.

That is why this street was named ‘Hi-Hi Street’. It even got to a point where the street sign was changed into ‘Hej-Hej Gade’ by somebody. No names mentioned here. But not anymore. Now it’s called Kronprinsensgade again.
