Christmas Jungle Style

I have spent Christmas in different cities and countries since I was a child yet it feels sort of funny to spend Christmas in 90 degrees, a roast sizzling on the BBQ, colorful parrots in the palm trees and Reaggaeton music blasting from surrounding gardens. Since I’m a creation of the cold north where snow and gusty winds rule during Winter time I am not used to prepare the Christmas dinner bikini clad. But home is where the heart is and this year my family has traveled across the world to explore the jungle with me here in Nicaragua and I’m loving it.

December 24th is the day we usually celebrate Christmas with a huge dinner, dancing around the tree singing carols and opening presents. This year not so much. No tree and no carol singing. Instead we began the day with a couple of laps in the pool and some tanning before shopping the best of meat, superb wines and vegetables. Local friends came over and I made Bloody Marys for everyone. A very different scenario from my usual Christmas setup.

On the 25th we got up early and after breakfast it was ‘adventure time’. We got a cooler with coronas, limes and water and set sail on Lake Nicaragua, which is the World’s 9th largest lake and the only lake where sharks live in fresh water. There are aprox. 370 little islands in the lake that all origin from when the volcano Mombacho exploded long ago. The rocks and giant pieces of mountain catapulted into the lake and today palm trees, gorgeous vegetation, monkeys, birds inhabit the islands and humans too. If you wanted you could buy your own little island for the net sum of 100 K. Many have done so and today there is a whole community of people living out there in houses. A school, a church and restaurants have been established on each their little island. It’s quite extraordinary.

Later, we went into Granada for some lunch and sightseeing and headed home we did one last pit stop at a local restaurant with probably the country’s most insane view over Laguna de Masaya. A volcano laguna. Here we enjoyed the sunset before the day was a wrap. Today I’m ready for some reading and relaxing by the pool.
