Burning Down the House

This morning around 6 am I woke up to the sirens of fire engines and helicopters circling around our house like angry hornets over a jar of strawberry jam.

Ignoring them was impossible even though I tried with the ‘pillow-over-head-trick’ nothing worked. So after only 3 hours of restless sleep Jannik and I tumbled onto the balcony and found a horrible scenario.

They say that where there is smoke, there is fire. And this was indeed the case this morning. A house just a skip down the hill was going up in huge hungry, orange flames and thick, black suffocating smoke was hurling up from the pieces left of the house into a yellow, light blue Californian sky.

It was a terrible sight and it makes you understand why smoking is not allowed in The Hills during the dry season. Only last year in November we had the same ugly experience in our street. The house 3 houses down from our home burned to the ground. And not only that; his Mercedes sports car and a Ferrari went up in smoke too that morning.
