Our World is about to change…

When we get a scratch on our skin we are happy to know that it heals fast. The blood dries up and slowly the skin grows back together without much ado. Our skin is a living material that sustains and repairs itself over and over again without us giving it much notice.

But what about non living materials? Let’s say the shirt I am wearing rips. Opposed to my skin, I would have to take my shirt to the tailor. My skin repairs itself. My shirt does not. This might sound as a stupid rhetorical discourse I’m having with myself, but think about it for a second. What is the exact difference between living and non living material? Well, one way to define living material is that it has 1. a container (a body) 2. a metabolism and 3. a DNA. Obviously, a shirt does not have those 3 elements. But could we create a situation where non living material begins to act like living material? That the shirt would grow back together just like our skin? The answer is yes, and this phenomenon is what we are exploring.

With Dr. Steen Rasmussen as the main character for our feature documentary, we are investigating how to create artificial life and non living technology and how to use it in the best way for humanity.  The documentary is produced by our LA based company Republic Royal LLC founded by Alexis Livingston and myself.

We have shot a while now both in LA and in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Next month we go to Denmark to surveil the 3D printer workshop. I am super excited to tell you more about it once I’m there.
